Women of Cardinal: Erica Sanchez’s Story of Navigating Success in Real Estate
In 2004, a young Erica Sanchez took her first steps into the world of real estate, starting as a leasing agent in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She found herself at the helm of a 168-unit owner-managed community—small by some standards but filled with promise. In just two years, she went from being a leasing consultant to managing the clients’ two largest assets, one being a 500-unit asset in Albuquerque, but the road ahead wasn’t smooth during this time. It was 2008, a global financial crisis shook economies worldwide, yet Erica stood resilient. As a young woman in a traditionally male-dominated field, she showed her grit, climbing the ranks through sheer dedication and an unwavering work ethic, dedication, and an unwavering work ethic.
By 2011, Erica had moved to Denver, CO, and had moved into third-party management, taking on a 148-unit property. This new chapter for her was filled with more opportunities and challenges. With an insatiable curiosity, she dove deep into asset management and budgeting. Her efforts began to pay off. In 2013, Erica played a crucial role in expanding the market, growing it from just three properties to 22 in an astonishing 18 months. She didn’t stop there. Her leadership helped establish the Bakken Apartment Association, further cementing her reputation as a trailblazer.
As Erica’s career unfolded, she wore many hats — business development, due diligence, and operations. By being part of this industry at a young age, Erica learned a few pertinent lessons, including that one doesn’t necessarily have to be the smartest person but should be willing to put in the hard work. She believes in hiring people who are passionate about their work and want to learn and grow. Business Development taught Erica how to think like a client, and due diligence taught her the power of quick analysis; delving deep into the nuances of assets and markets for best outcomes backed by sharp insights and experience from operations developed patience and cultivated leadership skills for Erica.
These experiences eventually led her to Cardinal, where she now holds the title of Regional Vice President of Conventional Housing Operations. Her impact on the real estate industry has been nothing short of extraordinary, particularly as a young woman leader. Erica has shaped various aspects of the industry through her leadership, innovation, and advocacy.
Since 2018, Erica has also been a dedicated Apartment Association of Metro Denver (AAMD) member, contributing in numerous roles. Most recently, she’s been Chair of the PR Committee for 2024-2025, Chair of the Golf Committee for 2023-2024, and a Voting Board Member from 2022-2024, among other positions. Her hard work and dedication haven’t gone unnoticed. In 2024, she was honored as Person of the Year and Defender of the Year for her courageous testimony on four legislative bills.
Looking ahead, Erica sees a future where more women will take leadership roles within the real estate industry. She passionately believes that women must recognize their potential, set high standards, and chart their own paths to success. Her journey is far from over, and it is a powerful reminder that anything is possible with determination and a clear vision.
