Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, or Jubilee Day, marks the date of June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the end of slavery. This news came more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. This historic moment not only symbolizes freedom for all African-Americans but also serves as a reminder of the progress we have made as a nation and the work that remains to be done in regard to equitable opportunities for the African-American community.
