What is your role?

Director of Talent Acquisition.

Describe your Cardinal Journey.

Like many folks at HQ, my journey with Cardinal started on site. I had just moved to Denver for my wife’s career and needed a job. While I had a role lined up with Greystar, a vendor from my job at the time told me “you have to check out what they are building over at Cardinal.” I took his advice and flash forward 10 years, I’ve been a Community Manager, National Trainer, National Recruiter, Talent Acquisition Manager and now Director of Talent Acquisition. A lot of left hand turns along the way–each of which were inspired by the challenge we all accept by putting on the Cardinal jersey to do the right thing for others.

Who has been influential in your life, and how have they helped guide you?

  1. This may sound cliche, but Alex has been someone that has shaped a lot of how I see the working world. If you’ve ever worked directly with him, you’ll know what I mean when I say he maximized me and pushed me to think bigger and more broadly than I may have been comfortable with at the time.
  2. Personally, I have to hand that to Peter. In my time in my roles on P&C, Peter has been a real champ in helping me to see and appreciate what really matters on and off the field.
  3. I also can’t answer this question without thinking of Eddie Moreno. Eddie showed me that the gravity and importance of our work doesn’t mean we can’t have fun.

What is something about the culture at Cardinal that you value or enjoy?

What I enjoy most about it is knowing that anyone who believes in it and acts on it is someone I can always count on. When we do what we do best for others and we do it together, we will always win. The world can be a tough place, but people who live the CVs are ones who make it better.

What does a perfect day look like for you?

A perfect day for me is one where in the morning, we’ve discovered a challenge that’s preventing people from being or doing their best. Then by that afternoon, we’ve come together as a team with openness and honesty and reached a solution that benefits folks who didn’t even know there was a problem in the first place. It’s the doing the right thing when no one is looking that makes me feel like I’ve had the perfect day.

If you could spend a day in any department at Cardinal, which one would it be and why?

Maintenance, hands down. The people who wear the uniform and save the day of a resident are my personal heroes. I would absolutely love to walk in their steel toes for a day.

What is a skill you have developed during your career that you didn’t know you had?

There’s about 100 people reading this who will laugh, but brevity is something I’ve become more aware of and have gotten much better at. (<<24 word count)

What’s a memorable project or initiative you’ve been part of at Cardinal?

Entrataganza was probably the most memorable. Still a relatively new product when compared to Yardi, the company-wide release of our Entrata platform was a time where I was able to build, learn, and teach. It taught me to be curious about why and how we do things and curious about what should be vs just what could be. Seeing it in its current form so many years later has been extremely satisfying.
